Most Americans probably don't know who Kathy Griffin is--even after she co-hosted the New Year's Eve show with CNN's Anderson Cooper.
Here's who Griffin is: She is a reality TV star ("My Life on the D-List") and a Christian-basher. Hey, that latter comment is my opinion, but read what she said here, and here, and you decide.
But The Cable Gamer doesn't think that there are two ways of interpreting these words, which she said upon winning an Emmy:
"A lot of people come up here and thank Jesus for this award. I want you to know that no one had less to do with this award than Jesus. Suck it, Jesus. This award is my God now."
Haw, haw. Not only do I think that that's offensive and tasteless, but I also think this: Griffin was being fake-courageous, going for a cheap and vulgar joke at an easy target, because Christians are mostly gentle and, as a rule, law-abiding. And free speech, as Oliver Wendell Holmes Jr. once observed, means freedom for the speech that we hate. If Griffin had really wanted to be brave, she could have made a joke about Allah. In which case, of course, she'd probably be dead by now--or deeply in seclusion.
But OK, this blog is about The Cable Game, not about sacrilegious Hollywoodites.
And so back to CNN. We might ask: Why did CNN put Griffin on the air? One wonders if CNN execs even knew, or cared, about Griffin's Christian-bashing words. Once again, we can be darn sure that if Griffin had slurred some more politically group, such as blacks, that CNN would have banned her for life. But once again, it was "only" Christians, so who cares? Nobody at CNN, that's for sure.
And revealingly, not many in the liberal-leaning media seem to have noticed. For example, Rachel Sklar, writing for The Huffington Post, went on and on about how funny and delightful Griffin was, in tandem with Cooper.
Indeed, Sklar was so overcome with enthusiasm that she wrote the following review of the evening's programming--see if you can spot the howler:
CNN had the much-ballyhooed Anderson Cooper (when is he ever not ballyhooed?) paired with Kathy Griffin, which was a surprisingly good match (Anderson played straight man..."
Oops. Excu-u-u-u-se ME, Anderson!
But don't worry, Rachel, all is forgiven here at The Cable Game. However, if you get the cold shoulder from La Anderson at the next GLAAD dinner, well, don't be surprised.
And one last question: Where's Jon Klein and CNN management? Some enterprising reporter might inquire as to whether or not CNN top dogs approve of Griffin--of course, the answer is that they must have.
So nothing has changed at CNN from the bad old days of its arrogance. I mean, we all knew that ex-CNN chief Ted Turner was a bigtime Christian basher, but the legendarily unstable "The Mouth of the South" is long gone from the CNN scene. And yet this incident--what was CNN thinking?--reveals that the same Christian-sliming mentality is flourishing at the Time-Warner Center.
UPDATE: On Tuesday night's edition of "AC 360," a completely unabashed--and obviously quite pleased with himself--Cooper was yucking it up, replaying tapes of himself and Griffin, reliving all of last night's "humor." So it's obvious that AC is either unaware of the pain he is causing, or just doesn't care.

Kathy Griffin is hilarious despite what you think of her Emmy speech. And answer your question, she's not brave, she admits that she's an attention seeking non-celebrity. The D-List is her shtick and if that includes some off-color humor, so be it. As long as we can recognize it and know the difference between fake and sincere speeches.
I thought they paired very well together. But then again anytime Kathy gets to spend the night with a celeb she's a fan of, how could it not be funny.
lol! Oh, come on off your high horse there, kiddo!
"Christians are mostly gentle and, as a rule, law-abiding."?? What rock have you been living under? Considering the majority of Americans are Christians, it's rather inescapable that most crimes here in the states are committed by Christians. Ya know, "as a rule" of logic.
Believe what you will, religiously, but ya gotta know. Cooper goes well out of his way, I think, to be considerate of all guests on his program. I don't know where you'd get "Christian-basher" about him besides through association with Kathy Griffen? Who only made a joke, mind you. A wee joke! Heard by... mostly only the audience of the lame Emmy awards.
Does that make you, as a blogger, a creepy middle-aged man? You are on the ~internets~ after all.
Oh please, it was a New Year's show - get over yourself!

I am a Christian and did not appreciate the comment Kathy Griffen made. But I'm not surprised or am going to lose sleep over it. Comments like that are made on TV all the time and it's really sad. I've traveled the world and talked with lots of other people and religious points of views. Bottom line... Christians are still severely persicuted. I am persecuted everyday for my faith. I've had things thrown at me, people swear at me, they've tried to beat me up, i've been spat on, the media says that I'm bad and I know people who have been killed just because they were holding a PRIVATE/ behind closed doors bible study. People burn our churches, our houses, villiges, torture us, all over the world. (AND I'm not even that dude on the street corner with the mega phone saying "you're all going to hell, yada yada yada"... i'm just an everyday Christian) Soon, maybe within my lifetime, it will get to that point here in the US, wait... it's already happening! (I pray it doesn't get worse). A true christian, someone who allows their faith to influence their decision making, is gentle and forgiving (but we all make mistakes). Christians let too many people walk all over them. Why? It's becuase retaliation is not in our best interest, eventhough we want too, it doesn't make us weak if we don't. Too many ignorant people have no idea how difficult it is to be a Christian in todays society.. if anything we're stroger becuase we take the shots and don't cry like little babies. Christians are told to "turn the other cheek" and "whoever has not sinned, cast the first stone". I'm sure everyone has heard that before.
And in responce to tonya; "...only made a joke, mind you. A wee joke!": true, it was a joke, but over time with the media promoting more anti-christian than religious tolerance and respect, allows ignorance and hatred to grow in the younger generations who don't know any better.
It's well known by historians, psychologists, even the Nazi party and communist parties, (i.e. you know who and it's in his book) "if one tells a lie often enough, many will come to believe it!"
Thank you tonya for proving my point. I'm not calling you or anyone a Nazi by any means, BUT it raises the question if you maybe a product of that lie that's being told over and over and over that it's only a joke "A wee joke!". And I find it very sad that you can believe garbage like that and I pray that I'm wrong about you, that you're much smarter than that. Maybe it's me believing the, as athiest call, the "big lie". I do know one thing... the greatest minds in the world haven't scientifically disproven my faith, or even come close to scratching the surface. And when they try, they end up becomming Christians.. wierd coinsidence isn't it???? hmm....
BUT... Little by little the US is changing into pro-everything other than christian(Thank You Postmodernism!!!), "becuase those people are crazy and don't believe in evolution, blah blah blah". Did you know that Darwin became a christian after his theory and no longer believed in his theory, but it was already too late.... People had already took hold of this new idea and ran with it :-\
Also, this idea that most crimes are made by Christians just becuase the majority of the country claims to be "christian" is poppycock. How dumb of a statement that is? I'm not attacking your education but the statement itself. Just becuase someone say's they're a Christian, doesn't make them a Christian, they may believe in God (which is a start and a good thing), but it doesn't make them a Christian.
"as a rule" Do your homework and use your head.. please!... before making a claims like that. Please prove to me that you're better than that :-) God Bless!
sorry for this being so long... but sometimes i get on a tangent. put yourself in my shoes sometime, experience what i've seen and been through and you'll understand. Have a good day!
Since when has this blog allowed comments?
Anyway, Kathy Griffin is quite funny and anyone who takes what she says seriously really shouldn't. Anderson and Kathy were a fantastic team on New Year's and hopefully they'll be together again next time.
